Mental Health problems are nothing to be embarrassed about or ashamed of. 31% of people in the US suffer from anxiety and depression alone. This number has even increased by 11% since the start of the pandemic.
Depression is a very real condition that affects how you feel and act. It isn’t just a little bout of the blues, and it doesn’t mean that you are weak-willed. Your feelings of sadness and loss of interest in things that matter to you can lead to various emotional and physical problems, and leave you feeling like life isn’t worth living.
We can assure you that it is. And there is hope!
How Do You Know If You Are Depressed?
Depression can hit you at any stage of life. Symptoms stick with you throughout the day, nearly every day. Warning signs can include:
- Feelings of tearfulness, sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness
- Irritability, angry outbursts, and frustration
- Loss of pleasure or interest in normal activities
- Sleep disturbances like insomnia or sleeping too much
- Tiredness and lack of energy
- A decrease in appetite/weight loss or increased food cravings/ weight gain
- Anxiety, agitation, or restlessness
- Slowed speaking, thinking, or movements
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, self-blame, fixating on past failures
- Difficulty thinking, concentrating, making decisions, and remembering things
- Frequent or recurrent suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts, or thoughts of death
- Unexplained physical problems
If you are concerned about a loved one who is a child, teenager, or older adult, you can find specific symptoms for those age groups here.
What Is the Difference Between Depression and Sadness or Grief?
Things like the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or the loss of a job can be difficult to endure. Feelings of sadness or grief naturally develop in response to such situations. Sometimes people who are in the middle of experiencing loss describe themselves as being “depressed,” but being sad is not the same as depression. Grief and depression share some of the same symptoms, but they are different in these ways:
- In major depression, mood and interest are decreased for two weeks.
- During grief, self-esteem is usually not affected, whereas feelings of worthlessness and self-loathing are common when you are depressed.
- Thoughts of death may arise when thinking of or fantasizing about “joining” your deceased loved one while you are grieving. During depression, you may think about ending your life because you feel worthless or like you can’t cope with the pain of depression.
- You can experience grief and depression at the same time. For some people, a traumatic experience or loss can lead to depression. When this happens, grief is more severe and lasts longer than it would without the depression attached.
Do You Need Emotional Healing?
If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, be it grief or depression, these are all signs that something is out of balance. This is a sign that you need to undergo an emotional healing process. Read more about emotional healing techniques in our article Begin Emotional Healing with a Tao Calligraphy Healer.
Depression Takes a Toll
When your mental health suffers, your whole life suffers:
- You may become less productive
- You can experience chronic health conditions
- Your work or school performance declines
- Day-to-day activities become unmanageable
- Your work and love relationships may become tense or crumble
You don’t have to live that way anymore.
Did you know that your mental health can be affected by simple changes in your vibrational field? According to quantum physics, everyone and everything is a vibrational field. Each of our cells, organs, and systems has its own vibrational field that consists of positive and negative information and energy. Positive information supports good health, happiness, and success, while negative information can bring deterioration and challenges.
